Departure

Translation provided below

Vertrek

Het was de dag van mijn vertrek
de koffers vol en ik in 't zwart
een afscheidsfeest op deze plek
met vreemde vrienden van het hart

De zanger zong zijn laatste lied
rumba buena timbalero
toen ik de kleine zaal verliet
de laatste dans, de mooiste ook

Huilende handen wuifden tot
de horizon het zicht ontvluchtte
het onuitsprekelijke slot
geschreven in de avondlucht

en op mijn weg naar verre herfst
ook in de woorden van dit vers

Departure

It was the day of my departure
suitcases filled and I in black
a farewell party in this place
with strange friends of the heart

The singer sang his last song
rumba buena timbalero
when I left the small hall
the last dance and the best one

Crying hands waved until
the horizon fled from my sight
an unutterable closing
written in the evening sky

and on my way to a far autumn
also in the words of this verse

Karachi

A sonnet describing my experience of living in Karachi many years ago. This poem captures the essence in a frame. The English translation is provided below.

Een langgerekte ijle toon
die blijvend om verlossing smeekt
al duizend en eenmaal betoond
zolang het morgenlicht ontbreekt

De regen van augustus komt
en de oktoberwinden vluchten
maar meestal schijnt de zon
en daalt hij mooi in vuile luchten

Veel rechte straten door het zand
een goed bedacht project vervuild
door management en de migrant
die in zijn eigen basti schuilt

als de azan stopt is het laat
tijd voor paratha van de straat

Translation:

A thin and stretched tone
begging for redemption again and again
for a thousand and one times
for as long as dawn tarries

The rains of August come
and the October winds flee
but usually the sun will shine
and descend beautifully in dirty skies

So many straight roads in the sand
a proper project polluted
by mismanagament and the migrant
that hides in his basti

When the azan is finished it is time
time for paratha from the street

Herinnering

A not so happy sonnet about living with memories that haven't found its place in the present. It's how I used to be but am no longer. The translation is provided below.

Gestrand in zanderige vlaktes
van trage tijd, verwijdering
waarin de echo steeds verzwakt
en toch elk woord te hard weerklinkt

Vanuit die hitte staart niets terug
dan wat het was en worden ging
toen dorst met elke dag vervluchtte
en de verbeelding weer verging

En zo verzwolgen door de tijd
herinner ik herinnering
sleep sporen, raak ze kwijt,
en lijst de oude dagen in

Het staat maar stil zonder bewegen
terwijl ik reis langs vele wegen

The translation in English:

Stranded in sandy plains
of time slowed down I am
in which the echo weakens
en yet every word seems too loud

Out of this heat nothing stares back
than what it was and was going to be
when thirst eluded with each day
and the imagination perished

And swallowed by time
I remember memories
drag traces and loose them
and frame the days of old

It stands motionless
while I travel many roads

Edwin Wins

Since Edwin, one of my favorite colleagues, is leaving after six months to join his old company again, I've written this duosyllabic (or whatever) poem for him. Basically Ed has a lot of potential. Whether or not his move to his previous company is a good one I don't know. But one thing is for sure, for now Ed wins. The poem of course is in Dutch.

Edwin
begint
bij BOOM
als kind

concept
verzint
ontwerp
ontgint

het vak
bemint
de kunst
verslindt

verschiet
geen tint
verdient
een lint!

Daarnaast
een grind-
ing groove
ontspint

Wij kre-
gen wind
zonder
een hint:

Edwin
hervindt
Nilsson
als vrind

De wond
verbind:
schenk ons
een pint

Hoe BOOM
ook sprint
't is Ed
die wint!

Leeg

Soms wil ik
langzaam op het dak
kijken tot de einder
afgelopen is

Dan loop ik naar de kraan
en was mijn hoofd
weer vol vergetelheid
en doedingen

Dan ga ik aan de slag
en sla de ogen op
sla de weg in
op weg naar de verte
